NPA rebel killed in Rizal battle

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna – A member of the New People's Army was killed and a soldier wounded in an encounter between communist rebels and government troops in Tanay, Rizal, Saturday morning, an Army official said.

The fighting, which lasted for about an hour, took place in Sitio (sub-village) Macaingaran, Barangay (village) Laiban at around 6:30 a.m., Lieutenant Colonel Noel Detoyato, spokesman of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, said in a text message.

The body of the still unidentified rebel and his M16 rifle and some documents were taken to the Tanay Municipal Police Office.

Pfc. Michael Angulo, who sustained minor injuries, was being treated at a Philippine Army station hospital in Camp Capinpin, also in Tanay.

Detoyato said the encounter occurred while the Army’s 16th Infantry Battalion was conducting an operation against the group of rebels that ambushed a military platoon securing the transport of vote-counting machines in Tanay on May 12.

The post-election gunfight resulted in the death of Pfc. Roel Saclote.

A separate encounter also took place in Sitio Tuay, Barangay Wawa in Rodriguez town before midnight on Friday. No one was hurt in the five-minute gun battle but the fleeing rebels left behind an M16 rifle, a number of rifle grenades, and a .45-caliber pistol.
