1.3M people audition for Korea’s version of ‘American Idol’

Being a singer in South Korea is a dream of thousands, and this year, more than 1 million have staked their claim to become the ultimate K-pop superstar.

More than 1.3 million South Koreans auditioned to be contestants for the second season of TV talent search show “Super Star K,” Korea’s version of “American Idol.”

The number is nearly twice the 713,503 singer wannabes who auditioned last year when the show premiered on the cable TV station Mnet.

The show format is the same as that of “American Idol.” Three celebrity judges audition the contestants. The winner is eventually selected by the public through texting and also chosen by judges.

In the first edition, 22-year-old Music major Seo In Gook emerged as the winner. He won 100 million won (about P3.72 million) and a recording contract.

He eventually signed up with Jellyfish Entertainment and released his first album last May titled “Just Beginning.” He won his first music chart award on “M! Countdown” for his single “Love U” last May 20.

“Super Star K” is expanding its reach and people behind the show will be flying to Los Angeles to look for talents to enter into the competition.

The LA audition will be held on June 26 at the CGV Theater in Koreatown.

The "Super Star K" audition is open to all ages and nationalities as long as they can sing Korean songs. The qualifiers in the first round will go to the second audition on June 27.

Those lucky and talented enough to qualify will go to South Korea in July to compete in the show’s “Super Week.”

The show’s second season will start on July 23.
